Atlanta’s Annual Tree Purge

This past weekend, I spotted the first evidence of a sad annual rite of passage for our treasured public greenspaces:

The orange spray paint means only one thing: this tree has been marked for removal.  Sadly, many of these monstrous beauties are at the end of the line.  Old age and a few years of drought have taken their toll, putting the City into a position where they must either remove the dying trees or simply wait for them to fall.  As someone who enjoys city parks on a daily basis, I’m thankful that tree removal is one budget item that hasn’t been eliminated.
