Dean Gardens, Atlanta’s Most Expensive Tear-Down

Last week, the home known as Dean Gardens finally sold for $7.6 million dollars.  There’s an interesting piece on it in today’s AJC – definitely worth the quick read.

A few thoughts and highlights:

1. The Bill Harrison designed house was on the market for fifteen years, which means that when it was first listed Forrest Gump won the Oscar for Best Picture, O.J. was trying on gloves that didn’t fit and Justin Bieber was still in diapers.

2. The 32,000 sq. ft. house features its own theater (designed in the spirit of Atlanta’s famed Fox Theatre), extensive gardens, a pool that’s about as large as the one that you’d find at Atlantis, a grass tennis court, an 18 hole golf course, an amphitheater and its own wedding chapel.  Did I mention that the buyer is tearing the house down?

3. It took a $25 million dollar price reduction in order to move the 58 acre, riverside property.

If you’re interested in checking out Dean Gardens, there’s a gala auction event taking place there in a couple of weeks.  They’re auctioning off the house and its fixtures, piece by piece.  Very green friendly of them, if you ask me!

If you’re against tearing down Dean Gardens, there’s a Facebook Group for that as well.
