Five Questions With… Kate Atwood

Kate Atwood is the founder of Kate’s Club, an Atlanta-based non-profit that provides programming and support for children and teens facing life after the death of a sibling or parent. She is an inspiring woman- well documented here, here and here– with a remarkable organization. You should support Kate’s Club (details below), and do what Kate says in her gruelling five question marathon…

Q. If there were a silent auction item at the event for “A Night On The Town With Kate Atwood”, where would you take the winner?

A. We’d start at the W Downtown’s Living Room – a true Urban Oasis. Then we’d take a Helicopter ride over the city – taking off conveniently from the helipad on W Downtown’s roof. We would land in Centennial Park and head over to The Tabernacle for some live music performed by the best acts in Atlanta.

If I won a silent auction helicopter ride, I’d require that the cast of Airwolf be included as chaperones.
Q. Favorite neighborhood(s)?

A. Virginia Highlands: Great History. Great Walking. Great People. Inman Park: I’m obsessed with the porches on the houses there.

Envy is not ok. Porch Envy is perfectly fine, however.

Q. Hidden Atlanta gems?A. Restaurant: Pazole in the Highlands – great atmosphere, great food, great margaritas.

Store: Urban Cottage – Fabulous and affordable furniture and gifts.

Person: Carmen Giles – Executive Director at Kate’s Club. One of the most giving, trusting, self-less individuals in our city who does great work for Kate’s Club and never expects recognition for it. She’s amazing.

Q. Mayor for the day- what’s on your to-do list?

A. -Day of Service. Giving back is one of the most powerful ways to bond a community – helping someone else very much helps your own self.

-Children’s Grief Awareness Day – I can’t believe there isn’t one in our city, state, or nation. I’d start to change that.-Lots of meeting with my Budget/Finance Committee – because I’m horrible at crunching numbers.

Q. In what ways can people support Kate’s Club?

A. – Money. Our families do not pay a cent for our services. We rely fully on the donations of our neighbors so a gift, whether $1 or $1000 makes a difference.

– Voice. Give a grieving child a voice by telling a family in need of our services about Kate’s Club.

– Time. Volunteers are the heartbeat of our organization. We have many ways a person can get involved from decorating the Clubhouse to being a “Buddy” to our kids.

BONUS QUESTION: What is Kate’s Club Cabaret, and why is it awesome?

Kate’s Club Cabaret is our annual fundraiser that brings together 400 of our biggest fans to celebrate life and to celebrate Kate’s Club. It’s a night of food, fun, live music, and gives us our biggest voice to raise money and awareness for children facing life after the death of a parent or sibling. This year its at the amazing new W Atlanta Downtown this Friday August 21st. It’s awesome because of the energy that the guests bring to the event! There is no other charity event like it all year…ok so I may be biased but just ask someone else who has been.
