This weekend’s PGA Tour Championship – commonly referred to by the media as Tour Championship By Coca Cola – puts one of Atlanta’s beloved in town neighborhoods into the global spotlight. One thing that I’ve always liked about this tournament, from an image standpoint, is that it’s both surrounded by a neighborhood and actually in the City of Atlanta. This is East Lake’s weekend to shine.
When the PGA Championship was played at the Atlanta Athletic Club (in Johns Creek) in 2011, or the former BellSouth PGA tournament was played at Sugarloaf (in Duluth), I always felt like Atlanta was somehow misrepresented as the host city. Granted, it really doesn’t matter what a golf fan in Peoria thinks is or isn’t really Atlanta… but to Atlanta-boosters like myself, seeing the Goodyear blimp’s overhead shot of suburban Gwinnett County felt like a weird misrepresentation of the City. Call me neurotic.
