TSPLOST: The Morning After

Defeat never comes easy, especially when dealing with the reality of the ballot box.  I’ve written over 500 blog posts, and my advocacy for a “”yes”” vote on TSPLOST was the first time I used this site to advocate for a political issue.  The final numbers haven’t been tallied, but it looks as though the pro-transit, pro-solution and pro-gress have been lost in a blow out (except in the actual City of Atlanta itself, where a resounding 58% of voters voted yes… but let’s not get caught up in the details).

This isn’t the first time that I’ve sided with a loser, and surely won’t be the last.  I was the lone vote for John Anderson’s failed 1980 presidential campaign in my Kindergarten class’ mock-election.  I was an adamant supporter of Justin Guarini throughout American Idol’s first season.  I’ve spent a lifetime rooting for the New York Jets.  I’ve come to grips with the reality that we can’t win ’em all, even when the prospect of losing seems to be fraught with irreperable consequences.

There is a Plan B – there must be –  and it doesn’t involve a move to Portland, Copenhagen or (gasp!) Charlotte.  Whether you were pro- or anti- TSPLOST, let’s take a few days to catch our breath, take stock of the situation, and move forward.  We can all agree to disagree from time to time, but what we can’t afford to do is tune out the issues completely.  Self-pity and despair are acceptable the first few days after an election… but after that, let’s move forward and make a serious effort to solve the transportation issues that have been crippling this city for so long.  We really have no other choice…
